21 Baby Products You Shouldn't Buy...Or Should You? A Realistic Look

Hey there,

Happy to have you here at the Baby & Me blog!

If you're a parent or soon-to-be parent, you've probably stumbled upon videos or articles with titles like:

  • 17 Things I Regret Buying for My Baby
  • Items I Didn’t Use with My Newborn
  • 15 Things I’m Not Buying for My Second Baby
  • Don’t Buy These Baby Items
  • Baby Registry Regrets

From a marketing perspective, these headlines seem incredibly appealing because, like most of us, you probably want to make smart choices, provide the best for your baby, and save money along the way.

But let's be honest—in today’s era of information overload, even a simple purchase can spiral into a rabbit hole of reviews, videos, and advice that leaves you feeling more anxious than accomplished.

When you come across these posts and videos, it's easy to get frustrated. Those catchy headlines and promises of valuable insights often end up being a waste of time, offering little to no real quality information.

And let's face it—your time is incredibly precious, and you deserve content that actually helps you make informed decisions, not just content that fills up your day with more noise.

Here's why this type of internet content just doesn't cut it for us, and probably not for you, either.

1- The Reality of Baby Products: One Size Does Not Fit All

Let’s be real—any baby product could be the “wrong” choice if it doesn’t suit your specific needs or lifestyle. The key is understanding that what works for one parent may not work for another.

Learning from others' experiences is valuable, especially when expecting your first child. It helps you imagine and start thinking about how you plan to care for your baby and your parenting style.

But remember, everyone’s parenting style is different, and so are their needs. So how can someone tell you FOR SURE what you need (or don’t) without understanding you?

When you see a video or post titled “10 Baby Products You Don’t Need,” the truth is that you really don’t need anything that doesn’t fit your life.

2- The Influence of Online Content

While learning from others is important, it’s crucial to remember that many people promote products not because they’ve found them useful but because they’re paid to do so.

Similarly, some might claim to dislike a product simply because they’re not using it correctly. Unfortunately, the internet is flooded with “experts” who may not have the knowledge or experience to support their advice.

This is why there are so many videos and articles about purchasing regrets: people didn't have the right information to make informed decisions. They didn’t evaluate their needs or choose products that would genuinely suit their lifestyle.

How to Avoid Baby Product Regrets

So, how can you avoid regretting your baby purchases? Here are a few tips:

1. Be Skeptical of Deceptive Marketing

Beware of marketing that exaggerates a product’s claims, labelling it as the “perfect, best thing ever” or the “terrible, worst thing ever.” These strategies often provide insufficient or vague information, pretending to help you decide while actually leading you astray.

2. Understand YOUR “Why”

Ask yourself why you want a particular product. Use this phrase: “I would love to have this product because...”

For example, you might say, “I would love to have an all-in-one carrier because I imagine myself carrying my baby for over a year. I enjoy hiking on short and low-intensity trails, and there will be places where a stroller isn’t practical for me. Therefore, an all-in-one carrier would be a great investment for me.”

However, if you don’t see yourself using a carrier for more than a year, or if you’ll mostly be in environments where a stroller is more convenient, then that all-in-one carrier might end up being a regret. Your “must-have” might not be someone else’s, and vice versa.

That’s why we created educational 101s in-store. We can easily explain the product's best use and value so parents and families can decide if it fits their needs.

3. Be Kind to Yourself

You’re already doing great by seeking knowledge and wanting the best for your baby. But remember, life can take unexpected turns, and things might not always go as planned. If you find yourself with something you thought you would use but didn’t, give yourself grace, knowing that you made the best decision you could at the time.
